Words from the Founder

At its core, DJMixtapez.com is a site created by true fans of music for true fans of music. I started out to simply build a place where real fans could gather, listen and collect music from their favorite artist in the comforts of their home. Music the radio refused to play. Music not found on commercial albums. Music the artist wanted their fans to hear.

You see, at first, I wanted to help reconstruct the entire music system. The old model was dying a slow death and dragging the industry down in the process. The new-age digital download providers were attempting to do the same however, each one suffered from the same fatal flaw. Although they carried everything, they specialized in nothing. Albums were missing from their selections and certain songs were completely unavailable. I saw an opportunity. Obviously, I needed a specialty to compete in this new market. The only choice I had was what I knew: Hip-Hop.

I grew up listening to and studying every piece of Hip-Hop music I could get my hands on. I brought everybody's album regardless of my personal feelings toward the artist. So I knew the genre well, I knew the soundtracks and guest appearances the top artist appeared on that were overlooked. I knew I could provide the fans with this knowledge. I just didn't know it would cost so much damn money. When I sat down to calculate the price of buying all the necessary albums, I quickly realized without a very strong financial backing, I didn't stand a chance. Let's be honest, nobody was going to give some kid from Philly a multi-million dollar loan based on a hunch. I needed a better niche. I needed a smaller, more exclusive selection. A selection with new material released every month or maybe every week. I thought about this dilemma while, coincidently, listing to a DJ Clue mixtape. I should be more specific, an exclusive freestyle from Jay-Z, exclusively on DJ Clue mixtape that I brought for about 5 bucks.

I'm not a historian but I believe once the record labels cut their second vinyl, mixtapes were born. From that point on, fans and DJs began crafting their own blends of their favorite songs and playing them at parties, concerts or any place they could. Eventually, with enough buzz in the streets, some fans and some DJs scored big time gigs touring with the top performers of the year. Someone decided to take the game a step further. By being on tour with the most popular artist at the time, the DJs had direct access to unreleased materials, insider information and exclusive songs. Remember the DJs were fans first, disc jockeys second, so of course they took full advantage of the opportunity to provide other fans with music. The record labels didn't object. The music probably would have never been released anyway, so they saw the idea as a free form of promotion for their artist. The DJs worked independently, they had their own built-in fan base and the idea didn't cost the label a dime. As an added bonus they were able gauge weather a song they were unsure of, was hot or not.

Over time, the game evolved again. Record labels realized the DJs catered to a very crucial market. The market that would determine not just what song was going to be hot, but what artist or what producer was gonna be hot too. Thus a long lasting relationship was forged. The record labels gave the DJs access to exclusive and unreleased materials; in return, the DJs gave the record labels access to the fans that were almost guaranteed to buy the albums. Of course, competition entered the equation and DJs began to get more creative. They began to personalize their mixtape's layout, the cover art and their signature phrases. Some DJs began specializing in certain genres: R&B, Reggae, Instrumentals, etc. Some DJs even began to specialize in certain labels. Then the internet emerged and things are changing again.

No longer did fans want to travel to buy their music, they wanted it delivered to them. Fans wanted their music now. That's where we step in.
